Clear the entire vehicle before moving

Remove all snow and ice from the roof, hood, trunk, windows, mirrors, and lights — not just the windshield. Snow that slides off your roof onto the car behind you is a hazard and may be illegal in some states. Use a snow brush and ice scraper; never use hot water on glass.

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking, which allows the driver to continue steering while stopping. On icy surfaces, ABS is genuinely useful — a locked wheel gives you neither stopping power nor directional control. However, ABS does not make you stop faster on ice.
