Why Nutrition Language Matters
Food labels, health articles, and clinical guidelines all use a shared vocabulary — but most of us were never taught it. Terms like bioavailability, glycaemic index, and net carbs appear constantly, yet their meanings are rarely explained in plain language. That gap makes it harder to evaluate nutrition claims or understand what you're actually eating.

Macronutrients
The three main categories of nutrients the body needs in relatively large amounts: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each provides energy (measured in calories) and serves distinct structural and functional roles.
Micronutrients
Vitamins and minerals required in small quantities but essential for normal body function. Unlike macronutrients, micronutrients don't provide calories — they support processes like immune response, bone formation, and nerve signaling.
Bioavailability
The proportion of a nutrient that the body actually absorbs and uses after consumption. A food can be rich in a nutrient on paper, but if bioavailability is low, only a fraction of that nutrient reaches your bloodstream.
Glycaemic Index (GI)
A scale from 0–100 that ranks how quickly a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose levels compared to pure glucose. Lower-GI foods cause a slower, more gradual rise; higher-GI foods cause a faster spike.
Glycaemic Load (GL)
A refinement of glycaemic index that also accounts for the amount of carbohydrate in a typical serving. GL gives a more practical picture of a food's real-world effect on blood sugar.
Dietary Fibre
A type of carbohydrate found in plant foods that the body cannot fully digest. Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help moderate blood glucose and cholesterol; insoluble fibre adds bulk to stool and supports digestive regularity.
Saturated Fat
A type of fat found mainly in animal products and some tropical oils, where carbon atoms are fully 'saturated' with hydrogen bonds. Dietary guidelines generally recommend limiting saturated fat intake, though the science is nuanced and evolving.
Antioxidants
Compounds — including certain vitamins, minerals, and plant chemicals — that help neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells over time. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are common dietary sources.
Phytonutrients
Naturally occurring compounds produced by plants, often responsible for their color, flavor, or defense mechanisms. Many phytonutrients, such as flavonoids and carotenoids, are associated with health benefits in research, though mechanisms are still studied.
Nutrient Density
A measure of how much nutritional value a food provides relative to its calorie content. Nutrient-dense foods — like leafy greens or legumes — deliver vitamins, minerals, and fibre without excess calories.
Complete Protein
A protein source that contains all nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts. Animal proteins are typically complete; most plant proteins are not, though combinations like rice and beans can together supply all essential amino acids.
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
The average daily intake level of a nutrient estimated to meet the needs of roughly 97–98% of healthy individuals in a given age and sex group, as established by nutrition authorities. RDAs are reference values, not personal prescriptions.
