A gravel layer actually raises the perched water table inside the pot, keeping the soil above it wetter for longer — the opposite of what's intended.
Water moves through soil by capillary action and only drains into a coarser layer once the finer material above is fully saturated. Adding sand alone to clay soil usually creates a concrete-like mixture. Meaningful improvement requires substantial organic matter, not sand.
Clay particles are extremely fine, and when mixed with sand in typical garden quantities the result can set almost like mortar when dry. Horticulturalists recommend incorporating generous amounts of compost or aged organic matter instead. This improves soil structure by encouraging aggregation — clumping of particles into larger crumbs that allow both drainage and moisture retention. Changing clay soil is a long-term process, not a one-season fix.

Pruning in autumn is a good way to tidy up and prepare plants for winter.

Autumn pruning of many shrubs and perennials can stimulate tender new growth that is vulnerable to frost, and may remove next season's flower buds.
The appropriate pruning window depends heavily on the plant type. Spring-flowering shrubs such as lilacs and forsythia set their buds in summer and autumn — pruning then removes next year's blooms. For most woody plants, late winter or early spring pruning (just before new growth begins) is safer and more productive. Moss growing in a lawn means the grass isn't being cared for properly.

Moss is a symptom of underlying conditions — typically compaction, poor drainage, shade, or low soil pH — not a sign of neglect.
Moss thrives where grass struggles. Killing moss without addressing the root cause results in it returning quickly. A soil test to check pH is a sensible starting point; moss often indicates acidic conditions that grass dislikes. Organic fertilisers are always safe to use in any amount because they're natural.

Organic fertilisers can still cause nutrient toxicity and salt build-up in soil if applied in excess, damaging roots and microbial communities.
"Natural" does not mean harmless in quantity. Bone meal, blood meal, and poultry manure all contain concentrated nutrients that can burn roots and tip the nitrogen balance of soil when over-applied. A soil test before fertilising — organic or synthetic — gives you a baseline so you apply only what's actually needed.
